Research

My main research interests include the following topics, although I have an interest in all aspects of the ancient world:

Pericles' Citizenship Law of 451/0 B.C. - A significant change to the requirements of citizenship in Classical Athens, the motivations for which I feel have not been thoroughly explored.

Using new techniques to study the ancient world - Digital imaging, automated translations and Geographical Information Systems are just some of the modern techniques which can be used to assist our understanding of the ancient world.

The representation of ancient warfare in video games - This was the subject of my MA dissertation, which allowed me to combine my interests in computer science and ancient history.

Discipline and disobedience in the Roman Army - This particular interest came from some research I did for my MA dissertation, and is aimed at counteracting the popularist view of the Roman Army being a well-disciplined fighting machine which was fiercely loyal at all times.

I'm currently working on a variety of articles, books and papers related to these subjects. I'm always happy to hear from other scholars, either in these fields or other areas of research.
